Herbert the Sheep Finds Something Good to Eat
Herbert was a sheep with soft, fluffy, white wool.
All winter Herbert ate the grain that Farmer James put out for his breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Farmer James would say, “Here you go, Herbert. Some tasty grain for you to eat.”
And because Herbert was a polite sheep, he would answer, “Baaaa” – which meant ‘thank you’.
All spring and summer Herbert ate the green grass that grew in his yard.
Farmer James would say, “I bet that you are happy to eat fresh grass.”
And because Herbert was a well-bred sheep, he would answer, “Baaaa” – which meant ‘yes’.
But by fall, Herbert was pretty tired of eating grain and grass.
One rainy day in October, Herbert went to stand under a tree.
As he was standing under the tree, something fell down and bopped him on the head.
“Baaaa,” Herbert said – which meant “ouch”.
Herbert looked at what had hit him on the head. It was red and round. Maybe it is a ball, he thought.
So Herbert rolled it around with his nose. The ball smelled yummy.
So Herbert took a little bite.
“Baaaa,” he said again – and this time “Baaaa” meant ‘delicious’!
Herbert thought about the long winter where he would only have grain to eat.
And he thought about the long spring and summer when he would only have grass to eat.
And being a clever and industrious sheep, Herbert thought of a plan.
For the next 3 weeks, Herbert rolled apples from the yard to his pen.
Now Herbert had apples to eat all year round.
