Like Kites in the Wind
Illustrated by Hannah Yorke Gambhir (then age 9)
Claire gathered together all of the art supplies that she would need to make Valentine’s cards.
Carefully, Claire cut out and decorated five hearts.
“Would you like some stamps to mail your Valentine’s?” asked her mom.
“No thank you,” she replied, “I don’t need stamps.”
Claire put on her coat and walked out to her front yard. She jumped up and threw her Valentine’s high into the air. The Valentine’s sailed away like kites in the wind.
The first landed on the front porch of Mrs. Huggly, an elderly lady who lived alone and who rarely had any visitors.
The second landed on Gloria’s front steps, a little girl who had just moved into the neighbourhood and who was just starting to make new friends.
A third landed on Mr. Grumlie’s prized rose bush, a cantankerous old man who did not like children.
A fourth landed on a baby carriage, a carriage with a peacefully sleeping newborn baby.
A fifth landed on the windowsill of the school bully, a boy who had never before received a Valentine.
